Through the civil rights era right on through the season opener at Daytona in February, the flag dotted infield campsites and was waved in grandstands by fans young and old.As the nation and at last, NASCAR comes to grips with race relations in the wake of the death of George Floyd, it was time: The flag is no longer welcome in the stock car series.NASCAR banned the flag at its races and all its venues Wednesday, a dramatic if overdue step by a series steeped in Southern tradition and proud of its good ol’ boy roots. It must now hope to convince some of its most ardent fans that it is truly time to leave the flag at home, leave those T shirts in the drawer, scrape off the bumper stickers and hit the track without a trace of the longtime symbol to many of racism and slavery.
A brief refresher: The Landmarks Commission met jointly with the Board of Parks Commissioners, Equal Opportunities Commission, and Landmarks Commission on January 30, 2018 to develop recommendations regarding the treatment of the Confederate monuments at Forest Hill Cemetery. The Landmarks Commission then discussed their recommendations at the meeting of March 19, 2018 and provided the following recommendations to Common Council: The small plaque should not have been removed without an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness. The Commission recommends that the plaque be offered to the WI Veteran’s museum and the WI State Historical Society and not to private individuals.

The Republicans know that the suburbs are full of people who left or avoid the cities precisely to get away from their pathologies of poverty and don’t want it following them. But the Republicans won’t distinguish between the slackers and the self supporting, and they don’t care about solving the poverty problem.
